The Open Boat by Stephen Crane
This was a story in which contained a small boat and four grown men trying to survive and be saved by the people that they believed would be looking out of a lighthouse for stranded sailors. It was a rather long tail about not a lot, but the description of the weather and the sea itself was excellent and really brought the danger of the situation to the forefront of the readers mind. The repetition of the passage of the captain not wanting to drown was also powerful to his character as well as to the reader and the first time it is mentioned on page 187 is particularly moving.
